Sam Smith fans ‘fuming’ as ‘odd’ gig suddenly cancelled after lights go off
Sam Smith’s concert in Manchester was suddenly cancelled mid-way through the performance after the lights went off and the singer left the stage.
Confused fans took to social media after the AO Arena briefly went dark and the performance suddenly stopped on Wednesday night.
Pete said: “Really odd night at Sam Smith’s Manchester show. Brilliant vocals and great energy for a handful of songs, a promise of an exclusive of a new song at the end.
“A few songs in, the stage goes black before house lights come up and it’s announced that the show’s cancelled.”
Joe was also left disappointed, writing: “WELL Sam Smith got cancelled. Four songs in and we had to leave I’m FUMING.”

Natalie also said: “I hope everything’s okay at the arena tonight with Sam Smith’s concert being cancelled.
“I know it’s not a serious incident or anything like it but this brings back such horrific memories of Manchester especially being so close to the anniversary.”
A few hours later, Sam took to Instagram to share their “heartbreak” at not being able to finish the show.
They wrote: “Dearest sailors, I don’t know what to say honestly. I fought off a virus a few weeks ago and since then we have travelled across Europe and had such incredible shows.
“Today in soundcheck I felt fine and was so excited to give Manchester an amazing show with a special surprise at the end.
“During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice. I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong.
“I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won’t.
“I’m honestly heartbroken I couldn’t finish the show tonight for you all.”
The show had begun with a tease that had fans thinking Madonna could be making a surprise appearance, ExaminerLive reports.
Sam had cryptically tweeted before taking to the stage: “Manchester, we’ve got a surprise for you this evening. Unholy won’t be the last song…”
They also shared an audio snippet of the singers repeatedly saying: “Sam and Madonna.”
Sam Smith’s representatives have been contacted by Express.co.uk.
