Salma Hayek genuinely feared she’d get in trouble over Black Mirror scene
The 56-year-old A-lister is due to appear in the sixth season of the dystopian thriller series and will play herself in an episode entitled Joan is Awful.
Despite acting under her own name in the highly-anticipated release, the trailer for the show’s return teased a plethora of brand new looks for the Magic Mike’s Last Dance star.
Ahead of the latest chapter’s June 15 premiere date, Salma opened up about her fresh acting role and shared that it challenged her beyond what she imagined was acceptable.
Labelling the experience ‘absurd’ and ‘a lot of fun’, the Hollywood name was keen to step aboard the production led by Charlie Brooker.
She said: ‘It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play an interpretation of myself.’
Salma continued telling Radio Times: ‘I got to explore the concepts and clichés people have about me and be self-deprecating.
‘It’s as if I created an alter ego where I could do the most disgusting, grotesque things that you would never do in real life… and have permission to do that.
‘It’s been surreal, and I think only a mind like Charlie Brooker’s could have come up with such a concept.
‘There are so many moments that shocked me in the script. There is one huge one that I had to come to terms with, and made me ask myself, “Do I really want to do this? Am I going to get in trouble?”‘
The synopsis for Salma’s episode offered viewers a taste of what’s to come and read: ‘An average woman [played by Schitt’s Creek actress Annie Murphy] is stunned to discover a global streaming platform has launched a prestige TV drama adaptation of her life — in which she is portrayed by Hollywood A-lister Salma Hayek.’
Elsewhere, the show’s creator reflected on his casting of Salma and noted that she was the perfect fit for the next instalment.
Charlie explained: ‘Thankfully, Salma Hayek signed up to play Salma Hayek because who else will play Salma Hayek?
‘We had a Zoom call with her, and I was nervous because I had just sent a script with her name in it, asking her to play herself.
‘But she loved it and started encouraging us to do all this stuff that I would never have dared write into the first draft of the script.’
Black Mirror season six returns to Netflix on June 15.
