Salma Hayek calls her wedding an ‘intervention’ as family ‘dragged’ her there

Salma Hayek compares her wedding to an 'intervention' after being 'ganged up on' and brought to courthouse by family

Salma Hayek has revealed the not-quite-so-romantic truth of her Valentine’s Day wedding in 2009 to husband François-Henri Pinault, explaining that she was ‘dragged there’ by her family, friends and partner.

The Oscar-nominated Mexican-American actress called the ceremony ‘an intervention’ and admitted to having a ‘phobia of the marriage thing’.

The 56-year-old joked she had ‘no choice’ when it came to tying the knot that day with her billionaire businessman partner, who she started dating in 2006.

However, it seems to have worked out just fine, with the pair remaining wed to this day, 14 years later.

‘I didn’t even know I was getting married that day. It was like an intervention. I don’t think I ever told this story,’ she shared in a new interview.

Salma said she was just ‘taken to the court’, adding: ‘My parents, my brother, they were all ganging up on me. I had a phobia of the marriage thing. The reason why it was a courthouse wedding was because they dragged me there.’

She told Glamour for their February 2023 issue: ‘I was nervous. And then after, there was a lunch at his parents’ house. My mother-in-law, who’s the most tasteful person when it comes to entertaining, had already been doing the lunch. I had no choice.’

François-Henri and Salma had announced their engagement in 2007, before welcoming their daughter together, Valentina, now 15, in September of that year.

However, Salma revealed the issue of them actually setting a date to get married was that she ‘just wouldn’t actually show up on the day or do it’.

After their low-key civil ceremony in Paris though, the Wild Wild West star admitted she ‘didn’t feel any different’, before later agreeing it was ‘kind of exciting’ to be married.

The pair then did a big ceremony in April at François-Henri’s request, who wanted a party, welcoming A-list friends including Stella McCartney, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz to a weekend celebration in Venice.

Discussing how they keep the spark alive in their marriage, Salma also revealed that they’ve found ‘it’s okay just to do nothing and be together’ as ‘boredom is underestimated’.

‘Sometimes sharing a space and doing your own thing in silence, with connectivity and thoughtfulness – ’Can I bring you a cup of tea?’ – is enough. It’s little simple things,’ she added.

The Desperado and Frida actress will next be seen in Magic Mike threequel, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, as wealthy socialite Maxandra, who teams up with Channing Tatum’s Mike to open a strip show directed by him in a London theatre owned by her estranged husband.

She previously revealed that her lap dance in the film was ‘very physically challenging’ to film.

‘My goodness. You just wait to see. It’s just complicated,’ she added to Entertainment Tonight, before revealing she plays ‘a strong woman’.

We’d expect nothing less.
