Sainsbury’s affected by Argos and Lloyds Pharmacy store closures this week
A range of high street retailers have reduced the number of brick-and-mortar outlets this year with more closures expected later in summer.
New Look, Marks and Spencer, B&M, Iceland and Lidl are among those that have announced plans to close selected branches for good.
While many have already shut down, Argos and Sainsbury’s stores are among those affected by further action scheduled to take place this week.
Argos customers in Ireland will lose the retailer altogether while selected UK Sainsbury’s branches will lose their Lloyds Pharmacy counters.
The closures will impact hundreds, if not thousands of employees, who may be forced to leave or move to another store.

Argos
Earlier this year the UK company revealed its plans to close all 34 of its stores in the Republic of Ireland.
Argos ceased its home delivery service back in March though the final round of store closures will happen this week.
By Saturday, June 24, 2023, all outlets in the Republic of Ireland will be gone for good following a “difficult decision” from the retailer.
A previous statement released by the company read: “Argos concluded the investment required to develop and modernise the Irish part of its business was not viable and that the money would be better invested in other parts of its business.”
The full list of closures coming this week is as follows:
- Ashbourne Retail Park, Ireland – closing June 24
- Athlone Argos, Ireland – closing June 24
- Blanchardstown West End Argo, Ireland – closing June 24
- Carlow Argos, Ireland – closing June 24
- Castlebar Argos, Ireland – closing June 24
Two standalone stores in the UK are also expected to close later this year, with
Cardiff Bay’s Argos planned to go sometime in July. The Newport, Wales branch will follow later on in the summer.

Lloyds Pharmacy revealed in January it was closing all 237 of its pharmacy sites located in Sainsbury’s supermarkets.
All branches will be shut by the end of 2023 with six kiosks expected to go this week on Thursday, June 22.
The list is as follows:
- Blackheath, Halesowen Street
- Edinburgh, Meadowbank
- Leicester, Glen Road
- Liverpool, Rice Lane
