Safeguarding against knife crime – Nancy Duckett, The Langley Academy

These knife arches are used around the community in places such as train stations and McDonalds as a way to prevent knife crime and help to try and make the local area a safter place. Thames Valley Police use the knife arch not only to check if a student has a knife, and to make the school a safer place, but to educate young people about the dangers of carrying a knife. Over the course of the following week each year group received an assembly, from a police officer who primarily works in schools, on knife crime in the local area and in Berkshire as a whole, and what the police does to tackle it.

The assembly introduced students to a way to anonymously report any information about knife crime, called Crimestoppers. Crimestoppers is a charity that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year, online and over the phone. It allows for anybody to report anything they might know about knife crime, whether someone they know carries one, or they have seen knife crime occur in the community. Crimestoppers guarantees completer anonymity, which means anyone who uses it can be safe in the knowledge that they had done something to help reduce knife crime without having to worry about any repercussions, such as having to appear in court, or have any further contact with the police.

Over the few months the discussion of knife crime has surged, what with the presence of the knife angel and the Polices new zero-tolerance approach to knife crime in Slough (which was launched last year). Hopefully procedures such as knife checks in schools, and continuing to talk to young people about the severity of the issue will help bring that number down in the upcoming year.
