Sacked Tigers coach’s surprise new NRL job

Michael Maguire will join the Canberra Raiders in a consultancy role for 2023, in what will be his first NRL role since leaving the Wests Tigers.

Maguire was sacked by the Tigers midway through the 2022 season, leaving Brett Kimmorley to take over in an interim role as the club finished with the wooden spoon for the first time.

Maguire, a former Raiders player and assistant coach, is currently in England as the head coach of the New Zealand national team – but will continue his NRL journey in the nation’s capital.

“Michael is a wonderful signing for our club and he brings valuable experience and knowledge to the role,” head coach Ricky Stuart said.

“He has a wonderful record as a coach at all levels of the game and we’re very fortunate to be able to secure someone of his calibre.”

Maguire has signed a two-year deal with the club.

“I can’t wait to work with him and have him working alongside our coaching staff and playing group,” Stuart said.

Maguire led Wigan to Super League glory in his debut first grade coaching season, before getting his NRL chance with the Rabbitohs in 2012.

The club made preliminary finals in each of his first two campaigns, before their drought-breaking grand final win in 2014.

He was let go at the end of the 2017 season, with Souths having missed the finals in back-to-back years.

After becoming head coach of New Zealand in 2018, he was signed as Tigers boss the following year, juggling both jobs until he was sacked in June.
