Ryan Gosling and Regé-Jean Page in ‘The Gray Man’ on Netflix and more streaming for Canadians
With so many different streaming platforms and cable offerings to navigate through, choosing What To Watch has never been harder. To make things easier, here are our best tune-in tips for the week ahead.

Claim to Fame
Co-hosted by Kevin and Frankie Jonas (guess Nick had better things to do), this new series features 12 celebrity relatives as they step outside their famous family member’s shadow and live together in one house. This all takes place as they continue to keep their true identities a secret from their housemates. The clandestine cast then compete in challenges as they try to discern who their counterparts actually are, all in an effort to take home the $100,000 prize. Actually, I guess now we know why Nick Jonas isn’t hosting it. The fact that we have so many questions about the show make this the pick of the week.

TUESDAY
Love Island USA
This oddly addictive reality series has quickly become a summer staple. The fourth season follows the same concept as its predecessors as a group of single “islanders” live together in a villa where they must pair up or peace out. Viewers also have the ability to influence what happens. If you are interested, note that the scheduling is a little peculiar. New episodes will air Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. I have a feeling the two-day break without fresh episodes might just what we need.

The Gray Man
With a production budget of $200 million (U.S.), “The Gray Man” is Netflix’s most expensive film ever. The action thriller stars Ryan Gosling and features Chris Evans, Jessica Henwick, Billy Bob Thornton, Alfre Woodard and Regé-Jean Page from “Bridgerton.” The story follows the CIA’s most skilled mercenary, Court Gentry (Gosling), after he discovers agency secrets resulting in a role reversal where he becomes the target.

Anything’s Possible
Directed by Billy Porter (“Pose”), this coming-of-age story is about a transgender high school girl as she completes her senior year. When a classmate develops a crush on Kelsa (Eva Reign), a tender romance develops, one that also highlights the pain of young love but also that anything is possible.

Best Foot Forward
Based on the book “Just Don’t Fall” by real-life paralympic athlete Josh Sundquist, this new series follows 12-year-old Josh Dubin (Logan Marmino) as he transitions from being home-schooled to public school. The story follows Josh as he convinces his classmates to see past his prosthetic leg, realizing that he is just another kid.

Blown Away
Always great to see a Canadian series make the list and this reality show that features the best glass artists in the world is a standout. Returning to Netflix for its third season, the show sees 10 artists compete against each other as they push their own limits, make sure their spectacular creations don’t break and that they don’t break down under the pressure. The series is hosted by former “Big Brother” contestant Nick Uhas.
Netflix

NEED TO STREAM
Friday Night Lights
For all of the deserved hype that “Breaking Bad,” “The Wire,” “Game of Thrones” and “The Sopranos” get, I have always maintained that “Friday Night Lights” is the most perfect show ever made. The series is a master class in character development, serialized drama and how to easily replace fan favourite cast members with new ones. I have rewatched the series many times since its final episode aired more than a decade ago and I am still just as impressed by the performances of Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Zach Gilford, Taylor Kitsch and the incomparable Michael B. Jordan. The entire series is now available to stream on Crave, which is a good thing because it means I can give my DVD box set a break. I often offer the pick of the week. This is my all-time pick.
