Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey has reacted to the viewing limits announced by Elon Musk.
“Running Twitter is hard. I don’t wish that stress upon anyone. I trust that the team is doing their best under the constraints they have, which are immense,” Dorsey tweeted.
“It’s easy to critique the decisions from afar…which I’m guilty of…but I know the goal is to see Twitter thrive. It will,” he added.
In a another tweet, Dorsey said, “And I do hope they consider building on truly censorship-resistant open protocols like bitcoin and nostr to help ease that burden. Good for all, and critical to preserve the open internet.”
Dorsey’s response comes hours after Twitter owner Elon Musk announced that the social media platform will temporarily limit the number of tweets that users can read per day.
Verified accounts will be limited to 6,000 tweets per day, while unverified accounts and new unverified accounts will be limited to 600 tweets per day and 300 tweets per day, respectively.
Musk said that the move was necessary to address “extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation.” He added that hundreds of organisations were scraping Twitter data “extremely aggressively,” which was degrading service for normal users.
On Friday, Twitter also announced that it will now require users to have an account on the platform to view tweets. This move, which Musk called a “temporary emergency measure,” is also aimed at preventing data scraping.
