Rundown ‘chalet’ overlooking Cornish beach hits the market for £350,000
The average UK house price is £274,000, but this varies significantly depending on where you are.
Cornwall is one place where the property market has reached new heights in recent years, with Brits’ desire to be by the seaside trumping their search for a bargain.
A glaring example of skyrocketed prices is this ‘chalet’ overlooking the Cornish coast, recently put on the market with a guide price of between £325,000 and £350,000.
Located in the beauty spot of Gwithian in Hayle, a short drive from St Ives and on the doorstep of the county’s most stunning beaches.
The wooden structure measures up at 204 square feet, with a kitchen, living room, and two bedrooms squeezed in.
If you’ve noticed something missing, it’s not a typo. Despite its high price tag, the home doesn’t actually have an inside toilet.
The facilities are instead situated in an outbuilding in the walled back garden – and they’re not exactly plush either.
Featuring a stained shower tray and curtain, basic WC, compact sink, and stained walls, the bathroom in this property is in need of an upgrade.
That’s before you consider the practicality of an outhouse. You’d need to head out into the garden every time nature calls, or get yourself a chamber pot to relieve yourself at night like Henry VIII.
There’s work to be done elsewhere in the chalet, too.
Loose wiring can be spotted throughout, as well as holes in the plasterboard and spots of mildew. You may also want to take a look at the home’s felted roof, as these can be susceptible to leaks and create damp.
Auction House Devon and Cornwall say: ‘This is a unique opportunity to redevelop and modernise (subject to the necessary consents) a two bedroom detached chalet situated within the highly desirable area of Gwithian, Hayle.
‘Directly from the property there are sea glimpse views however, just a short stroll away you will find the popular sand dunes at Gwithian Sands on your doorstep.’
The agents highlight another benefit of this place; that it’s offered freehold and not subject to occupancy restrictions.
Many seaside homes in Cornwall can only be lived in at certain times of the year, but you’re free to stay here whatever the season.
For someone with a weaker bladder, this chalet is probably best avoided.
But for a DIY-savvy beach lover who doesn’t mind the odd nature wee, it might be the ideal fixer-upper.
