Rugby league great’s daughter stars at Olympics

The Stingers have kick-started their Tokyo Olympics campaign with an 8-5 win over Canada in Group A.

The Australian women’s water polo team, who were playing their first international tournament in nearly two years, raced out to a 4-1 lead today with debutant Bronte Halligan notching the Stingers’ opening two goals before Canada stormed back.

The Canadians notched back-to-back goals during the second quarter in the space of 30 seconds to cut the deficit to just one.

But a late goal at the end of the second quarter to Zoe Arancini, followed by a successful five metre penalty score from Keesja Gofers during the third term, gave the Aussies their comfortable three goal lead back.

While Canada responded to cut the deficit to two goals, the task was ultimately too much as Australia proved the superior outfit and four-time Olympian Bronwen Knox also notched a goal.

Halligan, the daughter of rugby league great Daryl Halligan, finished the match with three goals in a starring performance for the Stingers.

Wallabies legend Phil Kearns’ daughter Matilda also plays for the team.
