Ruckus in Utkal University: OHRC seeks action taken report from DCP Bhubaneswar – Times of India
BHUBANESWAR: Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has asked for an action taken report from DCP Bhubaneswar regarding the attack on teachers and activists by a group of youths inside Utkal University when a seminar was underway at PG Council hall on February 12.
The rights panel passed this order on Tuesday after hearing petitions filed by eight activists including Pradipta Kumar Nayak and Biswapriya Kanungo. The Commission will hear this case on March 21.
The petitioners alleging inaction on the part of the police in arresting all the accused involved in the alleged attack on teachers and activists have sought intervention of the rights panel in the matter.
There was a seminar organised by the Citizen Forum on ‘Indian Constitution and Education’ at the PG Council conference hall of Utkal University on February 12. When JNU professor Surajit Mazumdar, professor of economic studies and planning, JNU, Delhi, was continuing his speech, a youth group identifying themselves as members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)/Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had come to the front of the dais and ordered the organisers to stop the seminar midway.
It created an altercation between the youths and organisers including teachers, activists and other intellectuals. The youths used abusive language on them and thrashed a teacher and an activist. The organisers had filed a police complaint against the youths at Saheed Nagar police station.
Commissionerate police on the very next day arrested two youths Manas Kumar Sahu and Sanjay Kumar Mallik for attacking teacher Surendra Kumar Jena and activist Pradipta Kumar Nayak at the seminar. They had allegedly thrashed the duo and misbehaved with JNU professor and other participants.
The police statement said the youths used abusive language and attacked the organisers. This incident had evoked sharp reactions from different student organisations, political parties and civil society members. Delegations of youth Congress and ABVP had met governor Ganeshi Lal and requested him to intervene in the matter.
