Royal who once sported a glamorous eyepatch and matched it with her outfits

Princess Michael of Kent is a member of the Royal Family who is famous for openly discussing her opinions on royal life. Whether she is commenting on the “awful” décor at Windsor Castle, branding the older royals as “boring”, or saying that the corgis “should be shot”, the royal is famous for being outspoken.

Dubbed ‘Princess Pushy’ very soon after her marriage to The Queen’s cousin, Prince Michael, in 1978, there have been a number of scandals and remarks that have been linked back to the royal. While this may be the case, the dedicated royal is also famous for her impeccable sense of style.

She showed off her fashion sense and her ability to make the best of a bad situation when she sported a series of very glamorous eyepatches following successful eye surgery in 2015. Princess Michael appeared in public at a Buckingham Palace garden party and at Royal Ascot.

Princess Michael became a member of the Royal Family when she married Prince Michael of Kent in 1978. At the time of their wedding, she was known as Baroness Marie-Christine von Reibnitz and was a Roman Catholic divorcee.

The couple has two children, Lord Frederick Michael George David Louis Windsor (b. 1979) and Lady Gabriella Marina Alexandra Ophelia Kingston (b. 1981). They now have two grandchildren, Maud and Isabella Windsor, who are the daughters of Lord Frederick Windsor and Sophie Winkleman.

While Princess Michael is no stranger to the spotlight, she attracted a great deal of attention in 2015 when she stepped out sporting an eyepatch following a successful cornea transplant.

A source close to the princess said at the time: “She told me that she had an eye operation under local anaesthetic. We were at a party and she started demonstrating what had been done, pulling her eyelid back. It looked gruesome. She was saying she had a cornea transplant and they had to stitch her eye from the inside.”

A cornea transplant is also referred to as keratoplasty or a corneal graft. It can be used to improve sight, relieve pain and treat severe infection or damage.

The cornea transplant wasn’t the princess’s first or last brush with ill health. Back in 1985, she was reportedly hospitalised for “nervous exhaustion” after disclosures about her father’s role in the Nazi party and in the elite SS guard came to light.

Her father, Baron Gunther Hubertus von Reibnitz, was reportedly a Nazi party member. Following the revelation of her father’s Nazi past, she told television viewers in an interview: “My shoulders are broad. I shall have to carry it. I wasn’t alive when all this happened, so I hope people will judge me on my performance, on what I am.”

The princess also battled coronavirus in November 2020 and a spokesperson for the royal said: “Princess Michael of Kent’s housekeeper fell ill three weeks ago and HRH was immediately tested and was found to be positive for Covid.”

In an update in 2021, her spokesperson said: “The princess has been unwell and has sought medical attention. It has been a worrying time for those around her. It has been difficult for those close to her to see her suffering. She’s really been through it.”

The royal appears to be on the mend nowadays as she attended the late Duke of Edinburgh’s memorial service in March 2022.
