Royal Blood slammed after hitting out at ‘pathetic’ Big Weekend crowd

Royal Blood had some rather strong words for the crowd at Radio 1’s Big Weekend.

The rock duo took to the stage in Dundee as part of a stellar line-up featuring headliners The 1975 and Lewis Capaldi.

Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher were probably expecting a warm reception, but they were left somewhat disappointed.

This led to them branding the crowd ‘pathetic.’

The Figure It Out hitmakers got sarcastic with revellers from the get-go, with frontman Mike taking to the microphone.

‘Wel,l I guess I should introduce ourselves seeing as no one actually knows who we are,’ he quipped.

‘We’re called Royal Blood and this is rock music.’

He then asked the audience: ‘Who likes rock music?’

After the crowd responded with cheers, Mike mocked: ‘Nine people, brilliant.’

Mike proceeded to introduce drummer Ben, asking the audience to say hello.

He then added: ‘We’re happy to clap ourselves because that was so pathetic. Well done Ben

But Mike didn’t stop there, oh no, as he turned to speak directly to the camera as the set streamed live on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds.

‘Can you clap for us? You’re busy? Can you clap? Oh, yes. Even he is clapping.’

Turning back to the thousands-strong crowd, he said: ‘What does that say about you?’

Finally, Ben slammed down on his drumkit and the pair left the stage – but not before Mike took off his guitar and put two middle fingers up at the crowd.

Well then.

Unsurprisingly, the comments didn’t go down too well – and Twitter was quick with the scathing roasting.

‘I love Royal Blood but this is David Brent level cringe. A grown man talking about rock music and walking off like one of the real housewives of Beverly Hills’, one mocked.

‘How utterly embarrassing! Imagine agreeing to play the Radio 1 Big Weekend for loads of money, knowing you’re sandwiched between Niall Horan & Lewis Capaldi and then doing this. Entitled p****k’, another tweeted.

‘Got a feeling Radio 1 won’t be playing much Royal Blood from now on’, another cringed.

‘Royal Blood are alright but I don’t think they’re of a high enough standard to be pulling this p***y diva nonsense’, another blasted.

‘if you want people to clap harder for you then play better music’, one declared.

Others said their behaviour has seen them go down ‘severly in the estimations of your own fan base’.

Ouch.

Royal Blood typically post pictures from their gigs on social media, thanking every city and venue after their shows… it’ll come as no surprise that they haven’t shared anything from Big Weekend.

Reps for Royal Blood have been contacted for comment.
