Ronan Keating’s brother Ciaran killed in fatal car accident

Ronan Keating’s older brother Ciaran has been named as the victim of a fatal car accident.

The Boyzone star’s brother was in his 50s when he died in a crash and had been travelling on the N5 near Swinford on Saturday, 15 July.

It’s been reported Ciaran was travelling with his wife Anne Marie to watch their son Ruairi, 27, play for Cork City FC.

His son’s team was playing in a League of Ireland Premier Division match against Sligo Rovers FC yesterday, where they lost 3-0.

It’s said that the centre-forward was replaced at during the match at halftime.

Anne Marie was apparently taken to Mayo University Hospital and received treatment for the non-life-threatening injuries which she sustained during the two-car road collision.

It is also understood that a male driver of a second vehicle is also receiving treatment in hospital for serious injuries.

Another male passenger in the second vehicle has also been taken to hospital.

The football team that Ronan’s nephew plays for, Cork City FC, issued a statement via Twitter.

Posting to their 53,200 followers, they said: “All at Cork City FC are deeply saddened at the passing of Ciaran Keating, father of our player Ruairí Keating.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Ruairí and the entire Keating family at this exceptionally difficult time.

“May he rest in peace. We ask that the family’s privacy be respected at this difficult time.

“Funeral arrangements will be confirmed in due course.”

The sad news comes just days after it was revealed that the centre-forward has signed a new long-term deal with the Irish club.

Regarding the club itself, the striker said: “I love the set-up at the football club and where it is going, so hopefully we can all kick on together.”

Regarding the death of his father, Councillor John O’Malley added: “Everyone is shocked and saddened by the awful news.

“He was highly regarded by all who knew him here and we are thinking of his wife and children and his extended family.”

Christy Hyland of Mayo County Council said: “Our sympathy goes out to all the Keating family. Ciaran’s death is truly shocking.”
