Rolling Stones new album with Charlie Watts recordings announced

This summer The Rolling Stones celebrated their 60th anniversary with a string of tour dates including two nights at BST Hyde Park. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood show no sign of stopping and tenaciously continue to perform, carrying on the legacy of Charlie Watts. Now the band plans to honour their late drummer, who died in August 2021 aged 80, with their first album of new material in almost two decades.

The Rolling Stones’ latest album was Blue and Lonesome, a record of Blues covers. Their last studio album of original material was 2005’s A Bigger Bang.

A source told The Sun: “After Charlie’s passing there was some uncertainty about what to do next. They had stadium dates scheduled so pressed ahead, but afterwards it wasn’t clear what the future looked like. But now they’ve had time to reflect they all feel it’s the right thing to keep doing what they’ve always done as a band, make new music and hopefully hit the road again to perform it to their fans. They’ve had a knock in recent years, but the show goes on – and The Stones always do.”

Before he died, Watts couldn’t perform with The Rolling Stones for the first time in decades and reassured the rest of the band that Steve Jordan, who ended up replacing him, would be up to it.

Richards remembered thinking: “Oh, I cannot do this without Charlie.” But Watts said: “You can do it with Steve. He can take my seat anytime… and he talked me into it. God damn, I loved that man.”
