Roger Federer leaves Carlos Alcaraz feeling ‘jealous’ after Wimbledon appearance
Carlos Alcaraz said he was left feeling jealous after Roger Federer made an appearance at Wimbledon in the Centre Court Royal Box. The world No 1 was playing on Court 1 and learned that the retired Swiss star was on the grounds after his match. Alcaraz is now hoping he can chat with the eight-time Wimbledon champion and see him around more.
Federer was honoured with a brief ceremony at Wimbledon on Tuesday as he made his first appearance at the All England Club since retiring. The 41-year-old ended his career on the other side of London last September – having his last dance at the Laver Cup at the O2 Arena.
He was invited to the famous Royal Box as a guest and received a standing ovation before taking his seat next to the Princess of Wales. And the 20-time Major champion watched on as Elena Rybakina started her title defence with a three-set win over Shelby Rogers.
Federer missed out on getting to watch Alcaraz with the Spaniard over on Court 1. And after beating Jeremy Chardy, the top seed admitted that he wished the retired star had been able to watch his match instead.
Although Federer’s appearance and ceremony had been announced on Monday, the 20-year-old didn’t know that the former world No 1 would be there until after he came off court. “After the match I was with the phone checking everything I have, all the stories, all the posts,” Alcaraz said.
“I saw that Roger Federer was here. I was a little bit jealous. Honestly, I want Roger Federer to watch one of my matches obviously. I wish to talk a little bit with him. For me would be amazing.”
And Alcaraz was hoping that this wouldn’t be the last anyone saw of Federer at a tournament, adding: “I hope to see him around more than once.”
