Roger Federer confirms Wimbledon return schedule after commentary role query

Roger Federer has confirmed that he WILL attend this year’s Wimbledon Championships just a few months after denying that he’ll partake in a commentary role. The Swiss tennis icon bid an emotional farewell to his career last summer at the Laver Cup in London.

He’s taken a step back from tennis since with Federer rarely seen in public, but he was back on the court in London on Thursday as part of his Neon Legacy initiative. Federer was in attendance at a refurbished public court in Greenwich where he spoke on a range of topics.

Most notably, the 41-year-old confirmed that he will be at Wimbledon this year in some capacity. According to I News, Federer said he ‘would be spending a couple of days’ at SW19 in a few weeks.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion was involved in last year’s Championships as part of the Centre Court centenary celebrations. But Federer has already admitted that his return to Wimbledon this year will not be as a commentator.

There had been some reports that Federer was in discussions with the BBC to work as a guest commentator, but he quashed those rumours last month while conducting a Q&A on Twitter. When asked whether he would be “joining BBC during Wimbledon”, Federer replied: “No plans to commentate this year!”

However, Federer will seemingly be keeping a close eye on Andy Murray’s progression at Wimbledon with the Brit not getting past the third round since 2017. Federer believes Murray’s current form should see the three-time major champion enjoy a deep run at this year’s Championships.

“He just won a Challenger in Surbiton last week,” Federer added. “He won that the same week as Novak got to this incredible record of 23 slams and Andy’s plugging away at Surbiton – that also deserves so much respect.
