Rod Stewart ‘feels more responsible’ since knighthood, says Chris Evans
Chris Evans has been a longtime pal and colleague of Sir Rod Stewart and was one of the first to notice when the music icon began making his charity work more public-facing.
The Virgin Radio DJ admitted on the Dish podcast that he had questioned the Maggie May singer about it, to which Sir Rod candidly replied: “Chris to be honest, it was ever since I was knighted I just feel a bit more responsible.”
The 78-year-old was knighted in 2016 and assured the late Queen Elizabeth that he would “wear it well” after her grandson, Prince William, presented him with the honour at Buckingham Palace.
Chris hilariously recalled just how much the star’s charity work has ramped up, saying he had asked the musician years ago to take part in the annual Dine & Disco fundraiser he organised.
The 57-year-old shared: “We thought last year was our last one with Elton John because we had literally run out of people who were good enough to raise all this money.
“I was at this charity do about two months ago and he went; ‘Oi, oi Evans! Come over here! June 17 any good?’
“I said; ‘Rod that was four years ago!’ He’s such a dude man.”
Sir Rod did ultimately end up performing at the official last Dine & Disco on June 17.
The presenter also revealed that while the star was one of the first celebrities to take on potholes in their local area, his intentions behind this particular piece of charity work wasn’t quite as selfless as it appeared.
He explained that Sir Rod’s Ferrari was suffering with the potholes as it has very low ground clearance, but claimed the singer didn’t want to “cause a stink because it’s a Ferrari ”.
However, when an ambulance got stuck in one of the potholes, the musician seized the opportunity to fix the potholes for the betterment of everyone.
Dish co-host Angela Hartnett shared her own experience with getting an OBE, saying that it didn’t have quite the same effect on her as it clearly did on Sir Rod, but joked that she “waves a bit differently now”.
