Robinson swipes NRL over hip-drop furore

By Zachary Gates and Lachlan Harper

Roosters coach Trent Robinson has swiped the NRL as its crackdown on hip-drop tackles continues to drive debate.

Friday night’s game between the Broncos and Eels was marred by the hip-drop fiasco with Brisbane five-eighth Ezra Mam and Parramatta forward J’maine Hopgood landing in the sin bin after the referee deemed they’d performed the dangerous move.

Mam and Broncos teammate Payne Haas, who was also deemed to have performed a hip-drop tackle in the Darwin cash, were offered one-game suspensions.

They’ll be banned for two games if they go to the judiciary and fail.

“I feel like we’ve gone too far,” Robinson told 2GB’s The Continuous Call Team.

“I feel like we’ve got to the point where now we’ve got to penalise and send people to the bin on each occasion.

“My opinion on the Payne Haas one last night … I felt like he ducked underneath, got into an awkward spot, he’s going to fall somewhere and he’s trying to bring him down.

“I feel like it’s really accidental, and we’ve got to know that they’re going to happen in our game.”

After the Broncos’ win, Eels coach Brad Arthur was understandably disappointed at the potential of prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard being out for a number of games due to the Haas tackle.

A frustrated Arthur believed the Haas incident, which didn’t even result in a penalty, wasn’t too different to the Hopgood and Mam tackles.

“I’m not an expert on hip-drops but to me all three looked similar and I know which one had the worst result,” he said in his press conference.

“If the tackle is a hip-drop, then yeah, it should be charged, but I’m not the expert, I don’t make those calls.

“But I do know I’ll be missing Reg (Campbell-Gillard) for quite some time and my untrained eye looking at all three tackles … they looked pretty similar to me.”
