Robin’s New Foe is the [SPOILER] of One of Batman’s Greatest Enemies

In the newest issue of Robin, Damian Wayne discovers the true identity of Soul Mother, who has a deep connection to one of Batman’s greatest enemies.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Robin #7, by Joshua Williamson, Gleb Melnikov and Max Dunbar, now on sale from DC.

Robin’s newest villain has revealed their secret connection to one of Batman’s greatest enemies.

In recent issues of Robin, Damian Wayne has been fighting in the Lazarus Tournament for a chance at eternal life. Organized by Soul Mother, the contest of champions has attracted many fighters and villains with deep connections to the Batman mythos. However, the true purpose of the tournament and the motives behind its creation have remained a mystery until Robin #7, in which Soul Mother’s true identity was revealed.

After stealing Soul Mother’s sacred text and deciphering the Lazarus language, Damian discovered that Soul Mother’s real name is Rúh al Ghul, which translates to “Soul of the Demon.” She is the long-lost mother of Ra’s al Ghul and the great-grandmother of Damian. While Robin’s entire life has been defined by his complicated family dynamics, the revelation that Rúh al Ghul is alive has the potential to send shockwaves through his bloodline, as it was a secret kept from even Ra’s himself. Additionally, Robin #7 reveals the island the Lazarus Tournament is being fought on has the ability to resurrect people without the use of a Lazarus Pit, which could explain Rúh al Ghul’s presence.

Family has played an important part throughout the first arc of Robin. After splitting up with his father, Damian left to fight in the Lazarus Tournament, where he met up with Deathstroke’s daughter Ravager and Green Arrow’s son Connor Hawke, who hadn’t been featured in any comics for over a decade. Williamson recently said he has big plans for Hawke, which may come to fruition sooner than later as he prepares to fight Damian in the next issue of Robin.

Outside of Robin, Damian Wayne and Batman’s other former sidekicks compose the cast of Robins. Written by Tim Seeley and drawn by Baldemar Rivas, the book won the inaugural Round Robin competition, where fans could vote on which potential series they would like to see made. The six-issue miniseries is also the first time that Damian, Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown have been featured in their own story together.

While Rúh al Ghul and the League of Lazarus make Damian’s life a living nightmare, Red Hood is dealing with an entirely different Lazarus compound in Task Force Z. Written by Matthew Rosenberg and drawn by Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira, the book sees the once-dead-Robin leading a team of undead villains, who have been resurrected using the Lazarus Resin. Only time will tell what connection this series has to the League of Lazarus, the Lazarus Pit and the greater DC Universe.
