Road given £470,000 three-month refurb to shut again as speed bump is too HIGH

A ROAD given a £470,000, three-month refurb is to shut again — because a speed bump is too high.

Drivers found the underside of their cars clipped the traffic-slowing hump.

Tape measure checks confirmed it was 4.5cm higher than it should have been following resurfacing work.

The error in South Park Avenue, Norwich, emerged when the road re-opened to traffic after nearly three months.

It is to be closed again for today to lower the bump.

To add to Norfolk County Council’s embarrassment, a roadworks sign incorrectly gives the date of the closure as 31/09/22 — which does not exist — instead of 31/08/22.

The revamp saw the road widened and resurfaced, with a new zebra crossing installed.

But one existing speed bump was wrongly tarmacked, making it too high. Others in the road were unaffected.

Lib Dem councillor Brian Watkins said “This shouldn’t have been allowed to happen. There should be people on hand to check that work’s being done to specifications.”

The council said: “We received a report of an issue with a speed cushion. This was investigated by the area highway technician who found some damage to the surface.

“On further inspection, it was discovered it was higher than the design specification.

“This cushion will be removed and replaced and the costs of this work will be covered by our contractor.

“The works have been scheduled to take place during the summer to avoid disruption to the nearby schools.”
