‘Risky behaviour’: Heat players help tackle beach safety

A new summer safety campaign starring Brisbane Heat players will target the demographic data shows are more likely to die or find themselves in danger on Queensland beaches.

The Brisbane Heat and Surf Life Saving Queensland are teaming up to increase beach safety awareness in young men.

A new summer safety campaign starring Heat players will target young men, with data showing they’re more likely to die or find themselves in danger on Queensland beaches.

SLSQ’s 2021 Coast Safe Report found Queensland had its second worst year of coastal drownings since recording began, with 20 deaths on Queensland beaches.

Of those 20, 75 per cent were young men aged 20-49.

The “She’ll be right won’t save your life” campaign will aim to deter young men from swimming at night, not drinking and swimming, swimming between the flags and swimming at a patrolled location.

SLSQ will spread surf safety awareness and fundraise at some Brisbane Heat home games.

CEO Dave Whimpey said the partnership was a perfect catch.

“We have noticed a trend in young men undertaking risky behaviour on our beaches, which sadly has resulted in drownings on our Queensland coastline,” Mr Whimpey said.

“Men have been swimming at very remote locations, swimming at night and also after consuming alcohol.

“Who better to talk to young men about the risks associated than their cricketing idols.

“Cricket and the beach go hand-in-hand and we look forward to working with the Brisbane Heat on this campaign.”

The Heat will take on the Melbourne Renegades at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast on December 13, with their first Gabba match against the Sydney Thunder on December 19.
