Rio Ferdinand’s ‘police warning’ message to Kalvin Phillips amid Man Utd links

Rio Ferdinand has recalled the time he was warned by police not to return to Leeds having made the switch from Elland Road to Manchester United – a move Kalvin Phillips could be set to make himself this summer.

The Manchester Evening News reported last month that United were working on a deal to bring Phillips to Old Trafford. It is understood that Leeds are confident of keeping hold of their star midfielder and are not expecting a club to match their valuation of the player.

The rivalry between Leeds and United is one of the most intense in the country. Ferdinand believes that Phillips is unlikely to make the same move he did back in 2002, particularly given the fact he was sent a warning following his Old Trafford switch.

Speaking on his Vibe with FIVE YouTube show, Ferdinand said: “Kalvin Phillips doesn’t go to Man United. This is the difference between me and him – he’s a Leeds boy.

“He can’t set foot back in Leeds, his family have to move out if he goes from Leeds to join Man United. Trust me, I had the head of Yorkshire Police ring me when I left for Man United saying don’t come back for a year.

“And I had only been [at Leeds] for 18 months. Phillips is a top player, he isn’t going to Man United. If he does… brave man.”
