Rio Ferdinand believes signing Ruben Neves and Youri Tielemans is not the answer to Manchester United’s midfield problems.

United face the prospect of losing Paul Pogba on a free transfer this summer, while Ralf Rangnick is understood to be keen on reinforcing the squad’s midfield options at the end of the season.

Neves was linked with a move to United in the January window but Wolves were holding out for a £40 million fee for the 24-year-old, who still has over two years remaining on his contract.

Tielemans, meanwhile, is also on United’s radar as Leicester City appear to be resigning to losing the Belgium international in the summer.

The midfielder will have just one year remaining on his contract this summer and it’s understood that Leicester would be willing to sell him for a £35m fee.

Arsenal are also in the running to sign Tielemans but Ferdinand feels United should look elsewhere in order to improve their midfield.

When asked about Neves, Ferdinand said on his show Vibe with Five: ‘I like him, he’s fantastic, he keeps the ball as well as anyone, a really good footballer.’

But when it was put to him that United’s midfield next season should be Neves, Tielemans and Fernandes, Ferdinand replied: ‘That wouldn’t be my choice, I’ve got to be honest.

‘I like them, good players, but if you think that midfield is getting you any closer to the other teams I’d argue against it.

‘Mobility-wise we’d be lacking.’
