Riled Fast X star John Cena slams Fast & Furious critics – ‘Don’t understand’

John Cena only joined the Fast and Furious series in 2021’s F9, but he’s already a staunch defender of the franchise.

He took on the role of Dominic Toretto’s estranged brother, Jakob Toretto, a master assassin and thief. And, although things between them were extremely tense in F9, they seem to have settled their differences in Fast X – but Vin Diesel’s on-screen brother has now become frustrated in real life, following criticisms about the film.

The Fast and Furious franchise has been slammed in the past for its over-the-top action set pieces and extensive film library (Fast X is the 11th instalment in the series…).

But Cena sees it another way. Speaking to Extra, he explained: “Having just performed at the 39th instalment of WrestleMania, my philosophy is: ‘As long as it’s good, that’s all that matters.'”

Cena proved he was not just speaking with a bias, either. He added: “Fast continuously – and box office data backs it up – entertains the world, installation after installation.”

Cena, who was no doubt frustrated by the criticism, pointed out that people who are harsh on the film franchise for continuing just “don’t understand” it.

“Anyone who says, ‘Do we really need another one?’ I compare it to a fan who says, ‘Isn’t wrestling fake?'” Cena went on.

“They just don’t understand what we do,” he said. “And they just don’t understand what this is about. As long as the movies are exceptional. Which, this one might be my favourite of all time, and I go deep into the Fast library.”

Cena went on to add that Fast X is a “great ride” and he believes people are going to want another instalment in no time.

He said: “If someone makes that comment – which they’re entitled to – I just don’t think they understand what we do.”

People who aren’t a fan of the Fast and Furious series will be getting their wish, however, as Fast X was recently announced as the first instalment in the final trilogy of the franchise.

Diesel previously explained how Fast X was part one of two, with the untitled 11th instalment due to hit cinemas in 2025.

But, while on the red carpet for Fast X, Diesel announced that the two-parter had expanded into a trilogy.

The 55-year-old said: “Going into making this movie, the studio had asked if it would be a two-parter. After the studio saw part one, they said: ‘Could you make Fast X, the finale, a trilogy?'”

Fast X hits cinemas on Friday.
