Faith Nathan’s long range try with 90 seconds left proved to be just a consolation for the stunned Australians.
“I can’t fault the way the girls had a crack,” Australian coach Tim Walsh said.
“They gave themselves every chance… we can start experimenting and making sure we’re building for next year, where we’ll need to qualify for the Olympics.”

The Aussie men lost their quarter-final in heartbreaking fashion as Thomas Carol kicked a last minute penalty for a 17-14 comeback win.
Australia lost captain Henry Hutchison with a suspected ACL injury in their final pool game.
“It’s always disappointing going out in the quarters,” stand-in captain Stu Dunbar said.
