Rider suffers broken leg in ‘horrendous’ crash

A rider was left lying at the side of the circuit in agony after a terrifying crash at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix left him with a broken femur.

There were scary scenes in the Moto2 race when Jorge Navarro lost control of his bike out of the newly-named Miller Corner (formerly Honda).

His bike wobbled before sliding out from underneath him. With nowhere to go, Simone Corsi rode over the top of the Spaniard.

Corsi was able to limp to safety, leaving Navarro to lay next to the track wincing.

Despite sitting in a precarious position, the racing continued while trackside marshalls frantically sought to move Navarro.

Eventually, several laps after the incident, the 26-year-old was stretchered away and taken for medical checks.

MotoGP organisers later confirmed Navarro had suffered a fractured femur and had been taken to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital for further medical checks.

Corsi, meanwhile, suffered an injury to his right little finger.

It was a bruising Sunday at the Phillip Island circuit. In the feature MotoGP race, Jack Miller was taken out at the corner newly renamed after the Australian.

He walked away from the incident with only some soreness.

Alex Marquez, who was the cause of the Miller incident, was taken to the local medical centre after complaining of pain in his left hand.

The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix was won by Suzuki rider Alex Rins who prevailed over Honda rider Marc Marquez and Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia, who leads the championship.

MotoGP returns at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia on October 21-23.
