Ricky Gervais felt like he was ‘going to die’ due to sickly viral infection

Ricky Gervais, 61, told fans this week that he had experienced “severe abdominal pains” and was “vomiting” every time he moved.

The After Life star posted to Twitter on Thursday, May 11: “I’m not well today.

“In fact, I’d say I just lived through the worst eight hours of illness of my life.”

Gervais experienced “hot sweats and chills”, and he quipped: “Oh, and I really want to know who planted the 12 gravy bombs up my a**e.”

Referencing the sickness and diarrhoea bug, norovirus, the entertainer updated his fans about his health in the hours leading up to midnight.

“Update: I’m out of bed and I’ve had a bath,” Gervais posted. “Feel weak and annoyed that I wasted a whole day.”

Gervais added: “But that is a huge improvement on believing that I was definitely going to die.”

Norovirus is a short-lived illness, typically lasting for up to two days, the NHS says.

The symptoms can include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • A high temperature
  • A headache
  • Aching arms and legs.

The NHS adds: “The symptoms start suddenly within one to two days of being infected.”

Highly contagious, norovirus can be spread in numerous ways, from being in close contact with an infected person to touching surfaces that have the virus on it.

“Washing your hands frequently with soap and water is the best way to stop it spreading,” the NHS advises. “Alcohol hand gels do not kill norovirus.”

The main way to handle the infection is to stay at home, rest, and to drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration.

There are certain drinks to stay away from, however, such as fruit juice or fizzy drinks, as this can make diarrhoea worse.

Those infected by norovirus are strongly recommended to “stay at home and avoid contact with other people until you feel better”.

Now that Gervais is on the mend, he has an important message he wanted to share with his fans.

“Thanks for all your well wishes,” he Tweeted in response to all the likes, comments, and shares he received.
