Ricky Gervais’ security has been beefed up ahead of his UK tour Armageddon after the comedian received death threats over his polarising humour. The Office star has previously jokingly confessed that he had reported his fans “for hate crimes” for finding the funny side of his newer material.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “Ricky has been made aware threats have been made to his life. His offices haven’t shown them to him, but have told him very disturbing letters have come in for him.
“Ricky is very aware of the dangers and he can afford whatever security he wants, so he thought it was a no-brainer.”
The comedian previously announced that the Armageddon tour would be appearing on Netflix in the future.
On Twitter, he said: “Loads of people who couldn’t get tickets asking me if #Armageddon will be on Netflix. The answer is Yes! I will continue touring it throughout 2023 and then it will stream on Netflix around the world in 2024.”

Gervais tweeted following some warm-up gigs: “Another amazing audience at @lsqtheatre for my #Armageddon new material night.
“They laughed at things that shouldn’t be laughed at and I have reported them all for hate crimes. I’ll do more soon.”
Criticism is not exactly foreign for the After Life star, who received plenty of backlash in his Netflix special SuperNature.
One Twitter user wrote after the special dropped: “Ricky Gervais has a new stand up show out on Netflix today.
“Five minutes in and he’s making jokes about trans women attacking & raping people in public bathrooms. To him we exist only as a punchline, a threat, something less than human.”
A second raged: “So on the same month that we’ve seen anti-trans legislation, parents of trans kids investigated for child abuse, and Don’t Say Gay/Trans bills…
“Netflix releases its most transphobic show yet where Ricky Gervais jokes about trans women raping women in restrooms. #cancelnetflix.”
