Richard Madeley brands wife Judy Finnigan the ‘negative’ one

Richard Madeley claimed his wife Judy Finnigan is the “negative one” in their marriage.

The 67-year-old spoke candidly with Loose Women presenter Kaye Adams as the broadcaster reflected on the couple’s relationship.

Speaking on Kaye’s How To Be 60 podcast, she mused: “I read something Richard that said you are a positive person but Judy is, perhaps, someone who takes a less rosy view of life.

“Do you buoy her up but she keeps you grounded?”

“That’s fair enough,” Richard replied. “That’s true. But I would say that is one of the balancing points of our marriage, our relationship.”

The GMB presenter reflected on Judy’s past struggles with post-natal depression and suggested it can not only leave you with a “scar” but feeling anxious amid fears it “might strike again”.

Richard added: “She tends towards pessimism while I tend towards optimism.”

The former This Morning presenter opted to provide an example as he cheekily claimed his wife is the “negative one” in their relationship.

For instance, when they travel to Cornwall the pair would look at the same weather forecast but have “diverging interpretations” of how things will play out during their stay.

“I will turn around and say, ‘it looks pretty good doesn’t it?'” he commented. “She will look at me as if I’m speaking in Greek and say, ‘what are you talking about? It’s going to be raining all of the time.’

Richard added: “She tends to be much more negative than I am but to her credit, she adjusts to the reality and then celebrates it.”

The ITV host later shared that his other half does find him annoying but joked it was his job as Judy’s husband.

The broadcaster commented: “Of course she finds me annoying. Sometimes I find her annoying. My god, show me a marriage where that isn’t true.”

Richard and Judy have been married for more than 36 years and met when they were both working as TV reporters and later tying the knot in 1986, four years after meeting.

Judy, now 75, first saw Richard when he joined her at Granada as a news presenter and she was assigned the task of looking after him.

She has said she thought he “looked nice” and remembers him as “tall and handsome” and wearing a pale blue linen suit.

In 1986 Richard and Judy welcomed son Jack, now 37, and then, just as she was about to return from maternity leave, she found out she was expecting daughter Chloe, 36.
