Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy Is ‘Not Actively’ in Development

The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy is not being actively developed, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has revealed.

Speaking to Variety at Star Wars Celebration 2023, Kennedy gave an update on some of the previously announced Star Wars films that have seemingly taken a back seat to the three newly announced movies.

“Rian and I talk all the time. He is unbelievably busy.” Kennedy said. “So we’re not actively involved in anything at the moment because he’s doing another one of the Glass Onion movies and then God knows what else. But he really wants to step back into the space. It’s a big commitment of time, so that’s really on him.”

Johnson’s trilogy was announced even before The Last Jedi was released in theatres back in November 2017. Alongside many other Star Wars projects, it’s since been thrown in and out of the spotlight, with Lucasfilm giving periodical updates suggesting it is and is not still going forward.

It announced last May that the project was on hold due to Johnson’s commitments to other works, like the Knives Out franchise mentioned by Kennedy, but Johnson himself said in September that he was still discussing it with the Lucasfilm boss often.

He’s made clear that he really wants to return to the galaxy far, far away though, saying in November: “I pray to God I’ll be back there someday.” Knives Out 3 will seemingly come first though, as Netflix has already ordered the film and will likely want to see a return on its $450 million investment.

Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy, which will include at least the first film written and directed by himself, telling the stories of brand new characters, might therefore come eventually, but it doesn’t seem to be one fans should hold their breath for.
