Reynolds’ foul-mouthed chat with Wrexham hero Foster caught on camera
Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds could not hold back as he caught up with Ben Foster after their side’s thrilling 3-2 win over Notts County on Easter Monday. An enthralling game captured the essence of the National League as plenty of eyes were on the match and saw the former Manchester United goalkeeper make a 97th-minute penalty save to take the Welsh side top of the table with just four games remaining.
Reynolds and Rob McElhenney went through every emotion possible on the day, as they came back from conceding the first goal to going 2-1 up before the visitors equalised. Elliott Lee scored a third Wrexham goal to send the Racecourse into raptures but deep into stoppage time, County were awarded a penalty for handball, though Foster came to the rescue with a save that could hand them automatic promotion.
There were incredible scenes of jubilation once the full-time whistle had blown and Foster, who only recently came out of retirement to begin a second stint at the club, was crowned the hero. Reynolds made sure to catch up with the goalkeeper in the tunnel as he could not hold back his delight after an emotionally-draining game for the actor.
Reynolds hugged Foster and said: “My god! You son of a b****!” as the Wrexham stopper replied: “It doesn’t get better than that does it?” Before Reynolds asked the ex-Watford man to explain his save that will go down in club folklore – and joked that the 40-year-old is “too old for that”.
Foster said that he had cramp after making the save, to which Reynolds responded: “I bet you do, I have so much arthritis medicine up in my bag I am not even kidding – what the f***! That was bananas. That was the most dramatic thing I have seen in my entire life. I couldn’t watch, I turned just in time to see you [save the penalty] oh my god you sent them [Notts fans] all home. You did.”
Foster wasn’t aware of the likes of Reynolds and McElhenney going through every emotion in the stands as he asked the Hollywood A-lister whether he enjoyed the game. “I hope you lot were buzzed off that upstairs,” he said in their tunnel chat. “Because I was buzzed off it playing, honestly. People are watching this on BT, people are watching all over the world and thinking ‘What two teams these are’.”
Reynolds hugged Foster at the end of their conversation as he replied: “I will never be the same again. Yeah, and Notts being what they are – they are amazing. I just can’t even, I am never going to be the same again. Thank you.”
Supporters that saw the clip loved Reynolds and Foster’s chat, as @AmraniOz said: “I just love it that Ryan Reynolds fell in love with football.” While @louisbrownIOW tipped Foster for a job in Hollywood, as they tweeted: “I reckon we’ll see Ben Foster in one his movies one day.”
Several fans were happy to say that Reynolds’ passion for the sport has grown following his Wrexham endeavours. “I love that he’s completely been bitten by the football bug,” @homble wrote on Twitter. “It gets us all in the end. Great stuff.”
