Retro seaside village named ‘best UK hidden gem’ thanks to Caribbean-esque beach
A SEASIDE village in the UK has been named the best “coastal hidden gem” – and it has some of the best beaches in the country.
Aberdyfi in Wales is set within Snowdonia National Park off the coast of Cardigan Bay.
Holiday rental website HomeToGo released their Hidden Gem Index, finding the best UK destinations that are under the radar.
And the highest coastal destination – Aberdyfi – came in at number 10.
The study looked at everything from summer weather and pubs to activities and how photo-worthy it was.
The village has pastel-coloured houses and hotels lining the beach, with miles of golden sand.
Make sure to check the rules, as dogs are banned from the beach during certain times of the year.
There is also an old harbour still there, with watersports very popular with both locals and tourists.
The Sunday Times named it as one of the best beaches in the UK for windsurfing and kitesurfing too.
Visit during the summer and you can even watch yachting regattas and sailboarding competitions.
Last year, a £4.4million project was given the go-ahead, which improved the quay wall and the access to the water.
People on TripAdvisor have raved about Aberdyfi, especially the beach.
One person who called it a “beautiful hidden gem” wrote: “To say I was blown away with this little piece of paradise is an understatement.”
Another wrote: “The sand wouldn’t be out of place on Carribean island.”
Others praised it for having no “amusement arcades or beach bars” and said it was like a “step back in time”.
If you want a budget stay, there are lots of B&Bs and hotels to choose from as well as campsites and holiday lodges.
Beachfront hotels can be found for just £100 a night while campsites start from just £13 a night.
Getting there is easy as there are two train stations nearby – Aberdovey and Penhelig.
Or you can drive, with the village about 2hr30 from both Birmingham and Liverpool.
