Residents evacuated from homes following discovery of ‘firework’ during raid

Dozens of homes in an estate were evacuated after a police raid discovered a ‘firework’ this morning. Officers investigated throughout the afternoon after the discovery.

Police were called to Neville Drive, off Silver Street, in Irlam around 11am today to execute a warrant in relation to an assault. During this raid, a ‘possible explosive device’ was found leading to surrounding homes being evacuated, with a 100 metre cordon put in place.

The potential explosive was found to be a firework, with residents let back into their homes a few hours later. A GMP spokesman said: “The device was identified as a firework which is why residents have been asked to go back to their homes.”

A resident who was in a friend’s house on Keal Drive, opposite the raided property, said: “We suddenly just saw loads of police outside and then going into the house. It was shocking to see. They were in there for a while then they put up the cordon and asked us to leave.

“I asked what was going on and they said there was a suspected explosive device so we needed to leave. It was around two and a half hours before we could go back in.”

The cordon was dropped around 2pm with residents allowed back into their homes. An officer was stationed outside the house in question for a while longer while forensic investigation officers were seen entering the property.

GMP have been contacted for an updated statement. It is not known if anyone was arrested as a result of the raid.
