Remembering Sir Syed Ahmed on his birth anniversary today, Know more information about this day – Times of India

Today is the 205th birth anniversary of AMU founder Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. Sir Syed Ahmed, the founder of AMU, was born on this day in Daryaganj, Delhi. He wanted the Muslims to have Quran in one hand and science in the other. He laid the foundation of AMU in the form of Madrasa-tul-Uloom in 1875.
Sir Syed Ahmed Khan wanted the Muslims to have Quran in one hand and science in the other. This was the time when Muslims were backward in education. Sending daughters to school was considered against honour. Sir Syed took the initiative to change this thinking. Like Oxford University, dreamed of such a university in India itself. In 1875 he laid the foundation of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) as Madrasa-tul-Uloom with seven students. Which has made a mark in the country and the world today. This dream of Sir Syed is also being realized by the students studying in AMU. They are lighting the lamp of education by opening educational institutions in the country and abroad.
Born on 17 October 1817 in Daryaganj, Delhi, Sir Syed Ahmed took training in Arabic, Persian, Urdu. Staying in judicial service, first worked in Delhi and Agra. In 1864 he was posted as Munsif in Aligarh. This arrival proved revolutionary for Sir Syed. The revolution of 1857 shook him. Sir Syed started a job in the East India Company during that time. To answer the British in their own language, he dreamed of opening institutions like Oxford and Cambridge University in India. On January 8, 1877, the foundation of Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) College was laid on 74 acres of Army Cantonment land. In 1920, this college got the status of Aligarh Muslim University.
In the journey from MAO College to AMU, Sir Syed’s chaman has produced many such alumni who have brought glory to the name of their institution. Delhi’s Jamia Millia University was established on 29 October 1920 by alumni at AMU’s Jama Masjid. Maulana Mohammad Ali Johar, Maulana Shaukat Ali, Abdul Majeed Khwaja and Dr. Zakir Hussain were its founding members. Around 1925, Hakim Ajmal Khan took it to Karol Bagh in Delhi. Jamia Millia was established there in 1936 after getting more land near Okhla. Which is today included in the selected universities of Delhi.
Vice Chancellor of AMU, Prof. Tariq Mansoor, says that Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was a visionary. He is called the father of modern education. AMU is playing an important role in nation building in the field of education. Alumni are also taking forward Sir Syed’s mission. The biggest challenge for the AMU fraternity is to give more height to Sir Syed’s dream.
