Reddit is forcing moderators to remove NSFW label. Here’s why

Popular social media platform Reddit is forcing some moderators to remove the NSFW (Not Safe for Work) label. Many subreddits have used the tactic of changing their community’s label to NSFW as a form of protest against Reddit’s new API pricing, which has caused many third-party applications to shut down.

Reddit has now threatened to take action against the moderators of some of these communities, such as r/military and r/PICS, according to The Verge.

The report claims that Reddit has threatened the moderators of some of these communities and instructed them to change the NSFW label immediately. The social media platform argues that these communities weren’t historically considered NSFW and still don’t fall into the NSFW category under Reddit’s current policies. Furthermore, Reddit claims that if the decision to label these communities as NSFW is not changed, the moderators will be subject to actions such as losing the ability to moderate future communities.

In its defence, r/military argued in a post on Thursday that the subreddit comes with an NSFW environment, but they only recently decided to change it. The moderators noted that military content has the potential to be violent, and they are considering allowing even more “military based videos”.

However, bowing to pressure from Reddit, both r/military and r/PICS decided to remove the NSFW label, The Verge noted. r/PICS had previously shifted its focus to posting content focused on comedian John Oliver, before changing the label to NSFW as a form of protest against the recent API changes.

Redditors have been angered by the exorbitant fees the social media platform intends to charge for data access, which will have a devastating impact on third-party applications that facilitate user interaction and viewing of the platform. As a form of protest against the API pricing, many subreddits decided to temporarily shut down for 48 hours last month.
