Real reason Armie Hammer is ‘totally broke’

The disgraced star is heir to a massive oil family fortune – so why exactly has he resorted to selling timeshare holidays to tourists?

Armie Hammer has been “cut off” from the family dynasty established by his great-grandfather, Armand Hammer.

“His dad won’t help him anymore and he’s been cut off, so he got to work,” a source told People of the actor who is reported to be working in the Cayman Islands as a timeshare salesman.

While the well may have run dry for Armie following the “cannibal” scandal that landed him in rehab, the Hammer family continues to live high on the hog thanks to great-grandad Armand establishing himself as a billionaire oil tycoon in the 1950s with Occidental Petroleum, running the company from 1957 until his death in 1990.

According to 1996’s Dossier: The Secret History of Armand Hammer by Jay Epstein, the mogul was involved in number of scandals himself, ranging from money laundering to Soviet espionage.

Bypassing his own son Julian, the business was ultimately passed down to Armie’s father, Michael, who continues to run the Hammer International Foundation, the Armand Hammer Foundation and other organisations under the family name.

Armie’s lawyer Andrew Brettler told Page Six Friday following reports of his client working in the Cayman Islands that he could not, “confirm or deny the report because Armie hasn’t addressed it. I just think it’s s**tty that, if he is selling timeshares, the media is shaming him for having a ‘normal job.’”

In addition to the reported new gig, a source close to the disgraced Call Me by Your Name star told Vanity Fair that Robert Downey Jr. quietly paid for Hammer’s six-month stay at Florida rehab facility and has allowed Hammer and his family to stay at his house to avoid recent media scrutiny.
