Real Madrid ace Vinicius Jr choked and sent off in fresh racism storm
Vinicius had been infuriated by yet another alleged incident of racist abuse by a supporter inside the Mestalla. The 22-year-old attempted to seek out the individual, but it caused conflict between the two sets of players.
He continued to point at the culprit in the stands and was clearly furious. His Madrid team-mates, and opponents from Valencia, attempted to intervene.
A message was displayed on the Mestalla screen supposedly urging fans not to throw objects onto the pitch. It also warned fans not to ‘insult’ players.
Vinicius and other Madrid players could be seen shouting at a group of Valencia supporters behind the goal. The attacker then spoke to referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, who informed the stadium manager and the fourth official about the incident.
Tensions appeared to finally simmer, with the likes of Antonio Rudiger seen trying to calm down their colleague. Play had stopped for well over two minutes before restarting with the free-kick Vinicius had won before the incident.
In a separate incident 15 minutes later, Vinicius was at the centre of a brawl that saw him dismissed following a VAR check. It was initially unclear what had sparked the melee, with referee Bengoetxea showing yellow cards to two Valencia stars before engaging in conversation with the other officials.
Replays showed that Vinicius had pushed Valencia striker Duro in the face after the Spaniard had seemed to grab the Madrid attacker around the neck. Much to Real’s fury, Duro escaped punishment over the incident.
Vinicius, whose red card was the first of his La Liga career, sarcastically applauded the referee before angrily confronting the official. Rudiger was seen attempting to drag the Brazil international towards the tunnel.
Baying home fans reacted delightedly to Vinicius’s marching orders. He responded by gesturing a number two, in an apparent reference to Valencia’s fight against relegation to the Segundo Division.
Vinicius has suffered frequent racist abuse this season. La Liga has already filed eight separate complaints to local authorities over incidents involving the Madrid winger.
