Rafa Nadal sends classy message to Novak Djokovic as French Open winner in tears
Rafael Nadal was one of the first players to congratulate Novak Djokovic for setting a new men’s singles Grand Slam record. The pair were previously tied on 22 each but the Serb pulled ahead by winning the French Open. And he was in tears after making history.
Djokovic rewrote history on Sunday as he became the first man to lift 23 Grand Slam trophies and to win all four Majors at least three times. With the win, the Serb will also return to No 1 in the world and is now halfway to completing the Calendar Grand Slam.
After an incredible feat, Nadal was one of the first to congratulate his long-time rival with a classy message. Minutes after Djokovic secured a 7-6(1) 6-3 7-5 victory, the Spaniard took to Twitter to celebrate his achievement.
A 14-time French Open champion himself, Nadal wrote: “Many congrats on this amazing achievement @DjokerNole 23 is a number that just a few years back was impossible to think about, and you made it! Enjoy it with your family and team!”
It marks the first time in history that Djokovic has been ahead in the men’s singles Grand Slam race. Roger Federer surpassed Pete Sampras’ old record of 14 titles back in 2009 and went on to lift 20 in his career.
Nadal and Djokovic quickly caught up to him, and the Spaniard pulled ahead last year when he won his 21st and 22nd at the Australian Open and Roland Garros respectively. But the Serb has come from behind to smash the record and tie Serena Williams for the most Grand Slam titles in the Open Era.
