Raducanu set to travel to China exhibition this month despite injury lay-off
Emma Raducanu is set to appear at an exhibition event in China later this month despite not being fit enough to play following her multiple surgeries. The Brit went under the knife to solve injuries to both her wrists and right foot last month and is expected to be ruled out for the entire summer.
The 20-year-old is expected to miss Wimbledon amid a targeted return to training in late September, but is preparing to travel to China to attend the Hangzhou International Tennis Masters Tournament. The event runs from June 22nd to 25th at the Olympic Sports Centre in Hangzhou, with Raducanu to attend according to The i.
Raducanu will not take part in any tennis-related activities, however, as the likes of Carlos Moya, Marat Safin, Juan Martin del Potro and David Ferrer are set to join her at the event. Raducanu is half-Chinese through her mother, speaks fluent Mandarin, and has previously welcomed the idea of returning to the country.
“It was amazing news when I saw that the quarantine restrictions were being lifted,” Raducanu said at the Australian Open in January. “So, I really hope to come. That would be amazing, I’d definitely go back to Shenyang and see my relatives, see my family.
“I haven’t been back since before the pandemic because it was extremely difficult and I’ve missed it a lot. So I am very much looking forward to that chance.”
Raducanu’s agent hinted that she may even miss the US Open as a lengthy absence is expected in order to fully recover from her operations. “I’m having a minor procedure done on both hands to resolve the issues. I’m disappointed to share that I will be out for the next few months and while I am at it will have another minor procedure that is due on my ankle,” she wrote in her initial announcement, before later confirming that all three surgeries were successful.
