Raducanu ‘not in the business of pleasing’ as star told to work with 20 coaches

Former British No 1 Johanna Konta believes that Emma Raducanu should continue working with numerous coaches so that she can decipher which is best suited for her progress. The former US Open winner is currently sidelined following surgery but remains hopeful of bouncing back to form upon her return.

Raducanu has struggled with numerous injuries this year but took the decision to go under the knife to ensure that her problems do not continue. The 20-year-old announced on social media that she would miss several months of tennis to have minor procedures on both hands and her left ankle.

The world No 85 will therefore be out of action for Wimbledon and the French Open, though Raducanu feels that a stint on the sidelines will enable her to return in prime condition. The injuries were a major hindrance to the ex-world no 10 this year, though generally poor form has been her issue.

Raducanu has worked with numerous coaches already in her career, with Sebastien Sachs becoming her fifth coach in under two years. However, despite criticism, Konta believes that the youngster should continue operating as she is.

Konta told Sky Sports: “Having a change of coaches has always been quite normal but to be honest it’s all about finding the right people for you and if that takes five, 10, 15 or 20 then that’s what you have to do.

“You’re not in the business of pleasing the people outside for your choices of what you make for your own career. The decisions that she’s making are for her own benefit – not for how it looks in the media and on paper. She doesn’t owe anyone an explanation. That’s how I viewed it for me but people are always going to have an opinion.”
