The first of the two men’s semi-finals at the Cinch Championships had to be suspended on two separate occasions in the second set as two spectators were left needing medical attention in the stands. Alex de Minaur had taken the first set against Holger Rune to put one foot into Sunday’s final.
Players were feeling the heat on the court as they were shaded from the blaring sun every time they came to sit down on their chairs. Most spectators were also seen wearing hats and applying layers of sunscreen to deal with the hot conditions.
But there was concern midway through the first set with De Minaur on serve at 3-3 when there were loud calls for a doctor to get up to the stands. A fan appeared to have fallen ill in the stands and the match was momentarily suspended while the medics were making their way up to the spectator.
Thankfully it didn’t appear to be anything serious as play was able to continue soon after the medics arrived. However, there was another incident later in the set at 5-5 right at the top of the north stand.
There was once again cries from fellow spectators for the emergency services with the match once again suspended while they were able to attend to the stricken viewer. De Minaur was on serve and 15-30 down at a crucial point of the match at that time and Greg Rusedski, while sending his well wishes to the spectator, also felt bad for the Australian.
“This is really unfortunate for the players,” Rusedski said on commentary. “We really hope the person up top is alright. That’s already the second time it’s happened during this match and from a player’s point of view you always have a bit of concern for the spectator.
