Queen Camilla and Meghan Markle both wear jewellery to ‘ward off curses’
Queen Camilla and Meghan Markle have very different jewellery styles; Camilla has several key pieces which she regularly wears, whereas the Duchess of Sussex enjoys mixing vintage pieces with new items, and is famed for stacking rings, and choosing delicate gold and silver designs from high street brands.
Both women, however, own several items of ‘evil eye’ jewellery, and there is great symbolism behind the evil eye design.
According to Evil Eye Collective, the evil eye is also known as “mati” in Greek culture. It is “a curse thought to be given by a malicious glare that can cause bad luck or loss”.
It refers to the notion of “someone giving you the ‘evil eye’ from across the room”, and being envious of you, but many people believe this is more than a saying.
“People can knowingly wish negative thoughts on you, but the power of the eye is that some people unknowingly and innocently cast the curse on others. That’s why it’s important to wear an evil eye somewhere on your body to ward off this curse and protect yourself throughout the day.”
Today, people use evil eye jewellery as a symbol of protection against bad luck.
Camilla’s piece is a gold bracelet, with a thin chain and a small evil eye amulet, alongside a gold cross. The royal has worn this bracelet every day for decades, and it is not known where it is from.
Meghan, on the other hand, has several evil eye pieces which she has worn over the years.
Her Hamsa Ring from the brand Kimset by Milka, is one of her favourites, with her wearing it several times over the years.
The 14ct gold ring “features an ancient amulet symbolizing the Hand of God, together with an iconic evil eye” and is called “the epitome of protection”.
The brand hopes the ring, which is a “protective sign” will “bring you happiness, luck, health, and good fortune”. It is available to buy for £304.
The Duchess also owns a Didem Evil Eye Bracelet from Alemdara, which is handcrafted from 18ct gold and features “a turquoise enamel evil eye on a delicate yellow gold chain”.
The brand explained how “legend has it that the evil eye works as a shield for envy, reflecting any evil back to where it came from and protecting its owner from any harmful spirits.” The bracelet is still available to buy for £315.
An item Meghan has only worn once in November 2021 for her appearance at The New York Times’ DealBook Online Summit, is Mateo’s Eye of Protection 14ct gold, enamel and diamond bracelet, which retails for £1,210.
The evil eye charm is “a talisman that’s thought to ward off negative energy”, and it is “illuminated by shimmering diamonds”.
Meghan also owns the Altan Hand of Hamsa necklace in 18ct yellow gold from the same brand.
The royal’s final evil eye piece is from Edge of Ember and is the Visionary necklace. It features a “blue topaz evil eye to protect its wearer from negative vibes” and Meghan was spotted wearing it in March 2020 during a social media video.
