Pune: Engg students protest the lack of gap between exams – Times of India
PUNE: Over 100 second-year engineering students from different engineering colleges in the city protested in front of the vice chancellor’s office in Savitribai Phule Pune University on Monday demanding the university increase the gap between the in-semester and end-semester examinations. Students said that generally there is a gap of over 1 month between the two which has been cut short to 4 days this time.
“The in-semester exam carries questions from the first two units in each subject and is conducted by the individual colleges. This ended on January 20. Now the end-semester examination which is based on the remaining four units starts on January 25 and there is hardly any gap between each exam as it ends on January 31st. How are we supposed to finish the vast syllabus in just four days,” asked a protesting student.
The protest was held by students and was supported by activists from the National Students’ Union of India’s Pune chapter. Another student said that the students who had backlogs to clear were under immense pressure as they have to study for those exams and the end-semester exams. “Engineering subjects are vast and most of the students study during the preparatory leave just before the exam. If that itself is cut short to just four days, how will we pass the subjects let alone score in them?” asked another student.
Meanwhile, the pro-vice-chancellor of the university Sanjeev Sonawane said, “Whatever they have demanded, we have asked the dean of science and technology to verify these demands. We need to analyze if there is any merit in their demands or if is it an emotional demand. If there is any merit, we will place it in front of the board of examination (BOE) because this decision has been taken by the BOE after much deliberation. So we cannot change it suddenly. If there was just one paper that had to be shifted, we could have still thought about it, but postponing an entire semester exam is a bit hard. Because delaying the exam will delay the declaration of results which in turn will delay the start of the next academic year. Teachers are demanding that we finish the semesters as per regular academic calendars, so we have decided that the next academic year needs to begin on August 1. Only then can we reach the pre-Covid timeline.”
