PSV confirm plans for Cody Gakpo and hint how much Man Utd must pay

PSV Eindhoven director of football Marcel Brands has given Cody Gakpo the green light to leave in January should a club come in with a record offer for the forward.

Manchester United were keen to sign the 23-year-old before eventually opting to focus on bringing in Antony from Ajax during the summer transfer window.

Gakpo has enhanced his reputation further with 13 goals and 17 assists for his club this season while scoring three times in Netherlands’ World Cup campaign in Qatar.

Southampton and Leeds United reportedly made offers in August with Arsenal credited with interest once again with Gabriel Jesus facing a spell on the sidelines.

With no shortage of takers, PSV now admit a move in January could materialise should a record offer come in. PSV’s record sale still stands at the €40million (£36m) fee they received when Napoli purchased Hirving Lozano in 2019.

‘You have to be realistic. If you talk about Cody Gakpo and the price tag attached to him, there may be 10 to 12 clubs in Europe that can afford him,’ Brands told PSV supporters’ club talk show Eeuwig Trouw.

‘Amounts have not been discussed, but if the right club comes that Cody would like to go. Those agreements were already made before I came. It must be a record transfer for PSV anyway. Then you know in which direction it should go.’

Despite mounting speculation, Brands insists there have been no formal offers for Gakpo as of yet with the forward on holiday following his campaign in Qatar.

“In the media it seems like all the clubs are lining up, but the reality is that we don’t know anything about interest or anything yet.

‘It’s quiet. I’ve spoken to Cody, he’s going on vacation for 10 days. If something is at play, it is perhaps known to Cody or his management, but not to us yet.’

Erik ten Hag has confirmed he wants to bring in a striker to replace Cristiano Ronaldo following his exit.

‘But only when we find the right player,’ ten Hag said earlier this month.

‘We do everything that is in our power, so I do research on every opportunity that comes. We do everything we can if that opportunity will be there.’
