PS5 SSD expansion update becomes available to beta users, supported hard drives revealed

Sony PlayStation 5 owners will soon be able to expand the M.2 SSD storage in their PS5 console. As highlighted on Twitter by user Nibellion, the PS5 SSD expansion firmware update has become available to download in certain regions around the world today. However, at the moment this highly anticipated PS5 feature is only available for beta testers.

Sony has also published a support page which explains how to add M.2 SSD storage to a PlayStation 5.

And hard drive manufacturers Seagate have announced that a number of their SSDs will be supported by the PS5.

These SSDs are the new FireCuda 530 SSD. According to the Seagate website, the cheapest Firecude 530 SSD is $149.99 and offers 500GB of storage.

For 1TB its $254.99, while for 2TB its $514.99 and for 4TB its $999.99.

This Seagate SSD news was revealed in a post by Australian website Finder.

Speaking to Finder, Jeff Park – the country manager for Seagate Technology ANZ – said: “We have done some testing with Sony on the PlayStation 5 and today we can confirm that the FireCuda 530 with the heatsink has met all the PS5 requirements. With the PS5 design, the SSD card slot is very narrow, so there’s not much room for the SSD to mount. However, with the FireCuda 530 – even with the heatsink on the top – the slim design allows for it to fit. Of course, the FireCuda 530 without the heatsink is slimmer, so both of them will fit into the PS5.”
