Protester’s flare forces stoppage in NRL game

In some unusual scenes, play was held up when a pitch invader jumped the gates and found himself in the middle of Shark Park with a flare on Sunday afternoon, as Cronulla beat Wests Tigers 30-4.

The Tigers and Sharks players looked dumfounded as the protester made it all the way to the centre of the field.

It left players and viewers scratching their heads before security defused the situation.

Play took a few minutes to resume, with a fire extinguisher brought out to take care of the flare which was placed on the turf by the pitch invader.

But moments after that pitch invader was taken away by security, another person ran out onto the field before he was then dealt with.

“Every time I come here, I see something for the first time,” said Brad Fittler in commentary for Nine.
