Pro Teacher Strikes by Ava Van Dyke Townley Grammar School
Yet, I still support every single teacher who decides to strike, despite it throwing a wrench in my exam preparation. Understandably, not everyone feels the same way. Some students do not agree with strikes because it affects them in a negative way, some feel as if the teachers don’t care about their education (as they claim to) but only care for a pay rise.
But it’s not just a pay rise. Teachers are ridiculously underpaid for the hours they put in, and whilst this is the main reason for the strikes, it isn’t the only. For example, recruitment struggles, schools having to increasingly rely on non-specialist teachers for some shortage subjects. Additionally, a general lack of funding- where teachers are forced to provide equipment for students out of their own pocket. Not an easy thing to do, considering the severe salary imbalance.
It’s not just ‘taking a day off from work’. It’s a nationwide movement, crying out for something that has been desperately needed for years- but more so in recent months, considering the cost-of-living crisis the UK is currently facing.
Standing up for what you believe in is a core part of being human, and people who sit back and let their problems wash over them seldom make a difference.
A pay rise for teachers will have a positive impact on not just their lives but students’ lives as well. I stand with teacher strikes and so should you.
