Princess Kate’s engagement ring is similar to Anne and Eugenie’s

Kate, Princess of Wales’ engagement ring is strikingly different to the sparklers owned by Princess Anne and Princess Eugenie. But one thing that ties them all together is that they all feature central sapphires, a break from the traditional diamond engagement rings many wear.

The Prince and Princess of Wales announced their engagement on November 16, 2010, and they posed for photos in the State Apartments of St James’s Palace to mark the occasion.

Dressed in a navy wrap dress and flaunting her spectacular royal blue ring, Kate’s ensemble was reminiscent of Princess Diana’s when her engagement was announced in 1981.

Some were surprised by William’s decision to give Kate his late mother’s ring due to its association with Charles and Diana’s famously unhappy marriage.

But many saw the gesture as a heartfelt tribute to the late Princess from her firstborn and his future wife.

Diana was thought to have chosen the ring initially because it matched her blue eyes and reminded her of her mother’s engagement ring.

Unlike previous royal engagement rings that have been made bespoke, Diana’s ring was chosen from the catalogue of the royal jeweller Garrard.

No one in the Royal Family has sported a ring quite like Diana and Kate’s, although Princess Anne also owns a sapphire engagement ring.

Anne flaunts a cabochon sapphire in a classic setting from her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.

The round sapphire stone is flanked on either side by small clusters of three diamonds.

Anne’s first husband Captain Mark Phillips also gifted her a sapphire engagement ring, so it could be said that Anne is a fan of the beautiful blue gem.

The Princess Royal’s first engagement ring featured three diamond and sapphire stones of the same size.

Princess Eugenie also owns a sapphire engagement ring, but her chosen gemstone is particularly unique.

Eugenie’s ring features a rare padparadscha sapphire famed for its orange-pink hue and dazzling qualities.

The padparadscha sapphire is surrounded by diamonds in a floral pattern set on a gold band.

Eugenie said of her dreamy proposal in Nicaragua in 2018: “The lake was so beautiful, it was a special light and I even said: ‘This is an incredible moment’ and then he popped the question, which was really surprising even though we had been together seven years.

“It was the perfect moment because we knew it was going to end up this way.” She added: “I was over the moon, crying.”
