Princess Diana’s casual outfits inspired by ‘queen of perennial style’ Grace Kelly

Grace Kelly was an American actor who married the late Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. Throughout her life as a Princess, Grace was known for her impeccable fashion taste and beauty. So much so that more modern royals, such as Princess Diana, Queen Letizia, Princess Anne, and even Kate Middleton have been influenced by her style.

As the Princess of Monaco, Grace had many opportunities to wear designer gowns and jewellery worth thousands, but she also often opted for more casual outfits.

Although she was born in America, the French’s more modern, chic way of dressing influenced her looks while she lived in Monaco.

The Princess regularly donned crisp white shirts, Breton stripes, tailored trousers, and even espadrilles.

Her outfits would not be out of place today, and certainly weren’t in the 1970s and 1980s, when Diana imitated some of her fashion choices.

Samantha added: “If you want to emulate the classic Grace Kelly style – opt for Breton stripes, tailored trousers, A-line midi skirts, a crisp white shirt, a waist belt to accentuate your waist and a slick of red lipstick.

“None of these will ever go out of fashion, and you’ll always have something to wear and look stylish with just a few minutes’ prep.”

Fashion stylist Miranda Holder agreed. Describing Grace as “the queen of sophisticated minimalism”, she said the late Princess was “iconic for her streamlined silhouettes that were utterly classic but executed so perfectly could never be called boring”.

Miranda also noted Grace’s penchant for a shirt, saying: “Grace Kelly favoured crisp white shirts, wearing a single colour head to toe, neat, feminine fit and flare dresses with a nipped in waistline, kitten heels, and more.”

Princess Diana was often seen wearing a shirt tucked into trousers too, such as when she visited Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1997, a few weeks before her tragic death.

Diana was pictured donning a white shirt and blue jeans, cinched-in at the waist with a brown belt.

During the same visit, the late Princess wore a pink shirt tucked into a pair of black jeans, combined with flat black loafers.

On another occasion, in July 1986, Diana imitated Grace Kelly by wearing a bright pink buttoned cardigan over a white shirt.

The Princess of Monaco was often seen in a similar outfit, such as when she travelled on a royal yacht in the Meditarranean sea in 1956.

Grace is also pictured in sunglasses – an accessory she, as well as Diana, wore regularly.

Miranda noted: “Princess Grace of Monaco also made wearing glasses fashionable, known as a member of the ‘sunglasses set’ along with Brigitte Bardot and Jaqueline Kennedy, inspiring women globally to follow suit.”

But Diana was not only influenced by Grace’s causal looks, but by her more elegant outfits too.

In 1987, the late British royal donned a powder blue Catherine Walker gown to the 1987 Cannes Film Festival.

This dress looked strikingly similar to the famous pale blue gown Grace wore on the set of Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief.

Filmed in 1955, the thriller was set on the French Riviera, a stone’s throw away from Cannes.
